How Does Awareness Help?

Awareness -- opening to the full reality of our lives -- is a naturally
healing and fulfilling act. Because of fear, old hurts, and busy lives in a
complex world, we often hold back from awareness. This habit seems to protect
us, but it actually restricts us and leads us into difficulties.

When we bring nonjudgmental awareness to ourselves and our situation, two
things happen:

* Simple awareness itself is an energetic force that taps into our
organism's innate tendency towards balance and health.

* Awareness of the whole truth empowers us to take action that is helpful
and fulfilling.

Healing and growth take place in any moment when we open to awareness.
Healing and growth are also longterm life processes that deepen over time as
the habit of shutting down is replaced by the habit of awareness.

Growing in awareness, we also grow in our commitment to the wellbeing of
ourselves and others. In work and play, family and relationships, solitude
and community, we find a natural authority and sense of responsibility along
with simplicity, relaxation, and enjoyment.
